Abstract:

Reclaimed Asphalt Pavements (RAP) and Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS) are increasingly used in asphalt concrete (AC) pavements due to their lower initial cost and potential sustainability benefits. Despite these benefits, the use of these materials poses significant challenge as the recycled binder available in these materials is highly oxidized due to aging. This makes asphalt binder brittle and becomes a driving factor for cracking related distresses. In order to improve the performance of AC mixtures with RAP and RAS recycled materials, rejuvenators are used to modify the oxidized binder rheology and chemistry. Rejuvenators can be used in virgin binders to reduce the impact of increased stiffness or can be mixed directly with RAP/RAS stockpiles.
