Purpose<\/strong><\/h2>\n

We are happy to invite you to join us for a symposium on P<\/u>ersistent and E<\/u>merging O<\/u>rganic P<\/u>oL<\/u>lution in cold and coastal E<\/u>nvironments (PEOPLE 2017<\/strong>), which will take place in St. John\u2019s, NL, Canada, on October 16-17, 2017<\/strong><\/em>. You will be immersed not only in thought-provoking sessions but the breathtaking oceanscape in the oldest city in North America.<\/p>\n

Many persistent and emerging pollutants, such as petroleum hydrocarbons, pesticides, disinfection by products, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, chemical surfactants, organic nanoparticles, microplastics, are toxic, bio-accumulative, non-regulated and currently not included in regulatory guidelines. Understanding their fate, behavior, environmental and health impacts in cold and coastal environments and developing pollution prevention, control\u00a0and remediation technologies are essential for evidence-based policy\/decision making and sustainable development. This symposium will be the first event of the PEOPLE Network events in order to help address the knowledge and technical gaps, and bring direct benefits to academia, government and industry, as well as communities and especially indigenous people in terms of R&D, policy making, technology transfer, education and training, and public engagement.<\/p>\n

Abstract submission
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Prospective participants are invited to electronically submit their abstracts in English (max 300 words<\/strong>) in PDF or MS WORD formats by email to nrpop@mun.ca<\/a> by September 15, 2017 (Extended to September 30, 2017<\/span>)<\/strong>. The abstract must include a title, author(s) names and affiliations, as well as the email address of the corresponding author that the notification of acceptance and following communications will be sent to. The review of submitted abstracts will commence as soon as an abstract is received. Preference in oral or poster presentations may be indicated. No full paper submission is required, but selected abstracts may be invited for publication in a special journal issue. Student\u00a0and young professionals are especially encouraged to present their work. The top student presenters will be recognized by the CAWQ Philip H. Jones Student Awards.<\/strong>\u00a0Selected abstracts will be invited to publish their work in the following peer-reviewed venues with high impact in the fields: Advances in Marine Biology (Elsevier), Water Quality Research Journal (IWA), Journal of Environmental Informatics (ISEIS)<\/strong><\/p>\n
