As someone passionate about learning, connecting with new people, and expanding my horizons, I’ve always been drawn to opportunities that challenge and inspire me. This passion led me to pursue a Master’s degree, a decision deeply rooted in my love for the environment and my commitment to addressing climate change.
With a background in biology and a growing interest in environmental science, I found the Master of Environmental Science program at Memorial University of Newfoundland to be the perfect fit. The program’s integration of a final individual project and co-op opportunity offers a unique combination of academic learning and hands-on experience, exactly what I was seeking to make a meaningful impact in the field.
My academic journey began in Iran, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from one of the top three universities in the country. However, my curiosity about the world and desire to experience new cultures pushed me to explore further. I chose to pursue a Master’s in Biology at the University of Naples Federico II in Italy, the oldest university in the world. Living in the vibrant city of Naples, I was immersed in a rich cultural heritage and gained invaluable experiences. However, witnessing the profound effects of climate change, from droughts to floods, reinforced my desire to focus on solutions to environmental challenges.
This realization brought me to Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, in September 2023. Newfoundland’s unique environment, warm and friendly people, and strong sense of community have made a lasting impression on me. Joining various organizations as a volunteer and intern here has provided me with opportunities to develop valuable skills in communication and teamwork, all while connecting with incredible individuals who have supported my journey.
However, adapting to life in a new country has not been without its challenges. As someone who grew up in Iran, adjusting to Newfoundland’s climate was particularly difficult at first. The harsh winters and unpredictable weather felt overwhelming during my initial year. But with time and patience, I’ve started to embrace the rhythm of this new life and feel more settled in this beautiful province.
Reflecting on my journey, I feel grateful for the growth I’ve experienced and the resilience I’ve developed. Memorial University has not only deepened my knowledge of environmental science but also provided me with the opportunity to learn from incredible professors, engage with diverse communities, and work on projects that align with my values.
I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next and look forward to continuing to contribute to the vibrant Memorial community.
