Navigating life in St. John’s as an international student was no small feat. Coming from the bustling streets of Lagos, Nigeria—where getting directions is often just a shout away—adjusting to the world of Google Maps was challenging. One cold day, I boarded the wrong bus. Frustrated but determined, I asked questions, figured out the map, and found my way home. That lesson taught me resilience: the importance of breaking through even when the road gets tough.
Did I mention that it is okay to be tired? But you must pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and hop on the next bus to success.
Later, during my summer internship search in aquaculture, I faced rejection after rejection. Opportunities seemed limited to areas outside St. John’s, but I was adamant about staying here. Days turned into weeks, and despite the setbacks, I kept trying. Eventually, I received not one but two offers—both in St. John’s. I would have missed out on what I truly wanted if I had given up.
Rejection isn’t the end; for me, it is the beginning of breaking new ground. It’s part of the journey which teaches us to recalibrate, adapt, and win. Sometimes, “no” redirects us toward better paths. Staying consistent, learning from setbacks, and relentlessly pursuing our goals are headways to success.
So, for anyone feeling defeated or lost, chin up, brace up and keep walking tall. Insist on your dreams, learn from every experience, and remember: you’re closer to success than you think.
