Initially, I thought writing this particular blog would be the easiest piece I’d have to complete. But alas, I find myself deeply reflecting on my two-year graduate school experience at Memorial University, wondering – where exactly do I begin?
Like many international graduate students at Memorial, studying at this prestigious institution demands a good level of determination, adaptability, and resilience: the determination to travel across continents in pursuit of one’s dreams and goals; the adaptability to adjust to a new environment and culture; and the resilience to stay on course and overcome the unique challenges of being an international student.
My name is Aderonke Aboluwodi, a final-year graduate student in the Master of Marine Studies (Aquaculture) program at the Marine Institute. I would describe my experience at Memorial University as a transformative journey of resilience, self-discovery, and growth.
From Shore to Shore, Chasing a Passion
My desire to pursue graduate studies stemmed from a deep passion for self-development, both academically and professionally. I wanted more: more exposure, more knowledge, and more growth, and I went for it. Starting my studies in the fall of 2023 and gradually settling into my new environment, I soon realized the true extent of what I had actually signed up for. It became clear that if I wanted to achieve a different result, I couldn’t continue doing things the same way. Studying alongside students from diverse experiences and backgrounds added depth and richness to my learning experience at the Marine Institute. I greatly valued the learning experience with my classmates and was constantly inspired through the sharing of knowledge and experience.
The Aquaculture program gave me more than I had initially envisaged. My instructors’ dedication to imparting knowledge and prioritizing each student’s success was both deeply admirable and appreciated. One-on-one sessions with them were often sources of inspiration, instilling a sense of confidence in me and reinforcing the belief that there truly is no limit to academic excellence. Their support and encouragement were fundamental in making my graduate journey both meaningful and fulfilling.
The lasting Impact of Co-Op Placement
Although the program helped me discover my capabilities, completing an internship as an Aquaculture Technician assessed my readiness to apply what I had learned. The 12-week Co-Op experience led to an unexpected journey of self-discovery, bringing me face-to-face with real job expectations and challenges, and assessing my readiness for a career in the aquaculture industry.
From confidently working independently to accomplish tasks, to collaborating with a team to achieve daily and weekly goals, and at times navigating my responsibilities with minimal clarity, I realized that while I was performing well academically, nothing truly prepares you for a role like gaining hands-on experience, especially in a new environment.
This initial exposure indeed sharpened my perspective, unveiled untapped strengths, and highlighted areas for self-improvement. What made the difference was showing up every day and refusing to give up. It meant extending as much grace to myself, exercising patience through the learning curve, and staying open and willing to learn. This mindset was crucial for adapting, growing, and ultimately achieving my goals. This Co-Op experience did not just prepare me for the industry; it will continue to influence my approach to work and learning for years to come.
Looking Forward, Embracing the Future
While this may be read as a success story, which it truly is, there were moments along the journey filled with uncertainty. In those moments, I reminded myself why I began the journey and reflected on the growth I had achieved thus far.
Growth, as I have come to understand, is progressive and encompasses various facets of life. Growth doesn’t mean dwelling on the past or wallowing in regret. Instead, it is about learning from your experiences, rising above those challenges to become the person you aspire to be, and embracing the greatness that lies ahead.
As I near the end of this chapter in my graduate journey, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude for the knowledge I’ve acquired, the amazing people I’ve met, and the individual I am becoming. This experience has been more than just another academic pursuit or degree; it has been a journey of personal transformation, guiding me toward making a meaningful impact in my career.
To current and future students, don’t stop moving, trust the process, and give yourself enough grace as you navigate graduate school. The path may not always be as clear, but each effort brings you closer to achieving your goals and becoming the person you’re meant to be.
