Chen, Jiayi (he/him)

M.Eng Candidate, MASc., BSc. EPt, E.I.T.

Jiayi is now a research-based student at Memorial University. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from Wuhan University, China in 2016. After working as an engineer, he achieved his first master’s degree in environmental systems Engineering and Management at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

His research interest is mathematical modelling for waste management for marine oil spill response. To manage the waste generated after an oil spill, the integrated linear programming (ILP) and the economic order quantity (EOQ) are used to detect how the solid and liquid waste flows in an economical and time-saving route. In addition, inherent system uncertainty is evaluated by using factorial analysis. He proposes to build a two-level factorial system to analyze the effectiveness of each factor. The LINGO-based programming software and the Design-Expert are adopted in this study.

His undergraduate thesis was to use GC to characterize the catalyst’s performance. After that, he spent more than one year enhancing his academic knowledge and laboratory skills in solids remediation, wastewater treatment, GC/MS determination of PHA in wastewater, TSP, and PM10. He published a paper about the characterization of cesium catalysts using GC/MS. In addition, he is also familiar with HPLC, LC, AAS, AES, SEM and other solid phase and liquid analysis instruments. When he finished his master’s degree in environmental system engineering and management, he expanded his knowledge of lab, environmental regulations, and ISO 14000 families. he have abundant professional experiences to be an excellent skilled worker in laboratory analysis.

He was an industrial engineer/project manager assistant, and his duties were monitoring and coordinating industrial projects in coal-fired power plants. As a process engineer, he made project system design and building layout. From 2016 to 2018, he completed managing the SCR construction project of a 1000MW coal-fired power plant. In May 2018, he was assigned to the China Electric Council. During one year of secondment, he composed two professional reports about third-party companies’ dilemmas and the feasible research of environmental emission permits for China’s provincial government.
