M.Eng. student, M.A.Sc., B.Eng, E.I.T., EPt,
Yuanmei Zhang boasts a solid academic foundation spanning environmental engineering, systems management, and water quality, with both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Currently pursuing a Master of Engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland, she also holds an Advanced Diploma in Water Quality, a Master of Applied Science in Environmental Systems Management and Engineering, and a Bachelor of Engineering from South China Agricultural University.
Since joining NRPOP Lab in September 2021, Yuanmei’s research has centred on critical environmental concerns, particularly the biodegradation of plastics in marine ecosystems and its consequential influence on the marine carbon cycle. Her fervour for environmental science and technology is palpable, underscored by her participation in a Mitacs internship with Gaia Refinery, where she delved into life cycle assessment for direct carbon capture. Additionally, her significant contributions encompass water quality analysis and manuscript composition during her tenure as an intern at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
Proficient in laboratory techniques and adept at software such as SWAT, Minitab, and ArcGIS, Yuanmei demonstrates a comprehensive skill set. Her role as a Sustainability Coordinator within the Graduate Students’ Union showcases her proactive involvement in sustainability initiatives and event coordination. Furthermore, her commitment extends to educational outreach as a Volunteer Educator at The Rooms Provincial Museum, engaging in enlightening school children about Newfoundland’s cultural heritage.
