M.A.Sc., B.Eng, Associate Constructor (Civil Engineering, China),
Junzhang Chen obtained his Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Engineering Management from China University of Mining and Technology Yinchuan College, Ningxia, China in 2020. During this period, he participated in study visits at the University of Victoria, B.C., Canada, and Swansea University, Wales, U.K. in 2016 and 2018, respectively. He then obtained his Master of Applied Science Degree in Environmental System Engineering and Management from Memorial University of Newfoundland, N.L., Canada in 2022. He is now pursuing his Master of Engineering Degree in Civil (Environmental) Engineering supervised by Dr. Bing Chen in NRPOP Lab, Memorial University of Newfoundland, N.L., Canada.
Junzhang’s research interests are in exploring the process of treating toxic, persistent and recalcitrant organic pollution in wastewater by various types of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) in Microfluidic devices (microreactors) through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques. He also applies CFD to visualize AOP–microreactor systems, exploring microfluidic behaviour and chemical reactions in order to optimize reactor design and improve degradation efficiency. In his undergraduate studies, He published a paper on the soil mechanics of the Collapsible Loess in Ningxia, China, which provided ideas for dealing with the local foundations of collapsible loess. During his first Master’s Program, he acquired extensive skills and knowledge of environmental laboratories, environmental law and regulations (International, Canadian federal, Provincial), and the ISO 14000 series.
Since 2020, Junzhang has held the professional qualification of Associate Constructor (Civil Engineering), jointly issued by the Department of Human Resources and Social Security and the Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, China. Junzhang has been a Student Member of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM), the China Civil Engineering Society (CCES) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) since 2020 and the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) since 2023. Junzhang is a volunteer and member of the standing committee in the Graduate Students’ Union, Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Junzhang has been the President at the CSCE Memorial University Student Chapter and Young Professional Representative at the CSCE Newfoundland and Labrador Sector Executive Committee since 2023. Nationally, he has served as an Observer on the CSCE National Tech Talk Webinar Coordinating Committee since 2024, and as Regional Director (Atlantic) for IWA YWP Canada since 2025.
